Education

The Human Resources Organization and Staff Development (OSD) division offers a variety of free in-house learning opportunities, which include professional development courses, consultation services, executive coaching, strategic planning, organizational development, and team building. These services focus on providing the University of Connecticut Health Center employees and departments opportunities for enhancing their work environment and career.

Registration

To register for a course, first obtain approval from your immediate supervisor/manager and register online at www.healthstream.com/hlc/uchc. For directions on online registration click the link below.

You may also register through email at hrregistration@uchc.edu. Please include in the email that you have received approval from your immediate supervisor/manager, indicate the class, date and time. 

 

You may fax your registration using the University of Connecticut Health Center registration form and faxing it to 860-679-1051.

New Employee Orientation Program
Target Audience:  NEW EMPLOYEES

The University of Connecticut Health Center wishes to extend a warm welcome to all its new employees.

New Employee Orientation introduces the individual to the multi-faceted aspects of the University of Connecticut Health Center. The new employee will be given an overview of the organization that includes its dynamic history, current and future endeavors, and an insight into where they, as a new University of Connecticut Health Center community member, will fit into the beautiful mosaic that makes up the Health Center workforce.

Participants will benefit from the orientation program by:

  • Learning about the institution's mission and vision.
  • Understanding the organizational structure and initiatives.
  • Meeting other members of the University of Connecticut Health Center community.
  • Receiving information regarding state and federal regulatory requirements and OSHA safety training.
  • Learning about the many employee benefits offered at the University of Connecticut Health Center.
  • Signing up for employment benefits.
  • Obtaining your University of Connecticut Health Center ID card.

A continental breakfast will be provided.

Compliance Training

The University of Connecticut Health Center offers a variety of state, federal and agency driven compliance education. Mandatory education is assigned upon hire or promotion. Assignments are determined by job title and duties. OSD will send letters to advise employee of the assignments.  All assignments are made and tracked on the HealthStream Learning Center website.

  • OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen Training
  • Managing a Harassment Free and Respectful Workplace: Dr. Deckers has proposed that we all continue to work toward assuring that as members of the Health Center community we respect and learn from each other, value and encourage teamwork, and eliminate old concepts and prejudices.  In support of creating and maintaining an organizational culture aligned with this mindset, and in support of our diversity strategy to create an inclusive environment, we have a new training program entitled "Managing a Harassment-Free and Respectful Workplace."  This program was designed by an outside company with over 30 years of experience in organizational development.  We have invested in this program and have four certified trainers in the HR/Organization and Staff Development Department.

    All managerial staff including academic staff members who supervise employee and/or students, are required to attend the training session entitles "Managing a Harassment-Free and Respectful Workplace."  For directions on self registering, click Instructions for Self Enrollment in Health Stream Learning Center (HLC) (158K PDF).  Dates, times and location will be available to view once you log in to self register.

State Sponsored Programs (DAS) State In-Service Training Program

The In-Service training program provides high-quality, diverse training opportunities to all Connecticut state employees through a partnership of the Department of Administrative Services and the Community College System.   Registration for Spring 2008 is underway and all registration forms are due on January 31, 2008.  No late registrations will be accepted.  Click her for a registration form.  Printed copies of the catalog are available at the following locations:

  2. Complete and mail a transfer voucher with a hard copy of the registration to Department of Human Resources ATT:  Rosie Rodriguez MC 4035 no later than January 31, 2008.

Bargaining Unit Exempt Management Development Program
Target Audience:  BU Exempt Management

We recognize that our managers are all important to achieving the Health Center's mission to become the employer of choice in our region for people who want to be part of a caring committed, diverse and talented workforce dedicated to advancing health and wellness for the people of Connecticut.  In support of the mission, OSD has designed a Bargaining Unit Exempt Management Development Training Program with the goal of providing our management staff with the tools needed to be successful at the Health Center.

The program focuses on competencies in the areas of Human Resources Management, Financial Management, and Compliance Regulations.  Training sessions are offered twice a year from March - June and September - December.

By participating in the program managers will:

  • Gain an understanding of their role and responsibilities as a manger at the Health Center.
  • Learn approaches for hiring staff within the state system and unionized environment.
  • Identify effective techniques for recognizing employees.
  • Gain an understanding of their responsibilities with the performance evaluation process, as well as the process for counseling and disciplining.
  • Learn the steps in teh UCHC budget process and how to read and interpret financial reports.
