Travel Advisory

J-1 Visa
All non US Citizens and non Permanent residents planning to travel outside of the U.S. who plan to return must have the following documents to present for reentry into the U.S.:

  1. A valid passport.
  2. A valid J-1 visa (the visa stamp in your passport should be valid beyond the date you return to the US and should have multiple entries).
  3. A valid SEVIS Form DS-2019 issued by the Office of International Program, UCHC. PLEASE NOTE that your DS-2019 will have to endorsed by the Office of International Programs prior to your travel. If your DS-2019 was issued by another Exchange Visitor Program you should contact that organization directly for travel signatures.
  4. Student status J-1 visa holders require a transcript or a letter from the Registrar’s Office indicating full-time enrollment at UCHC. You may contact Cliff Sargis via email at csargis@uchc.edu for this document.

NOTE: If the present visa stamp in your passport has expired, you must secure the J-1 visa from the U.S. Embassy in the country of travel. Subsequent to 9/11, federal legislation mandates in the interest of national security have occurred and all U.S. embassies have different procedures for visa application. Individuals from certain countries or from certain disciplines may be subject to additional security clearance. Prior to 9/11 about 4000 security clearances were requested per year, after 9/11 that number has increased to 200,000. This procedure can take over 30 to 45 days. It is strongly recommended that you review information on their website or contact them prior to your travel. The website to U.S. Embassies around the world is: http://usembassy.state.gov/. Additional information is also available at the U.S. Department of State’s website: http://travel.state.gov/.

For visa processing at the US Embassies in the country of travel, the following is also required:

  1. Financial support documents. For example, if you are employed by UCHC, you should have an employment verification letter from Human Resources. You may contact Sheila Carenzo via email at carenzo@adp.uchc.edu for such letter.

  2. Student status J-1 visa holders - Most recent transcript and a letter from the Registrar’s Office indicating full-time enrollment at UCHC.

  3. If your dependents will be applying for J-2 dependent visas, you will need the marriage certificate for your spouse and birth certificates for you children.
